Super Dave On The Return Of Airshow

It takes a special breed of pilot to risk their life for thrills and little financial gain, and Super Dave (Dave Mathieson) is no exception. One of the stars of Discovery’s Airshow, the special is back for a four-week broadcast event on Mondays at 8pm beginning June 1st on Discovery.

Super Dave let Crave readers in on getting used to being filmed, the excitement of being recognized in public because of the show, and why he couldn’t imagine doing anything else for a living.

CraveOnline: Tell us how you got your nickname “Super Dave.”

Dave Mathieson: I was flying a plane in North Canada and on take-off the control column broke out of the dashboard of my Cessna 180, so I steered it with the doors and flew it back to the base without any damage.

What has it been like filming the show?

It’s been a blast… it’s been a lot of fun. It took awhile getting used to having a microphone on you but we have a lot of fun with those guys [the Discovery team].

And have you been recognized in public?

Yes that’s been very cool (laughs).

Do you remember the first time someone recognized you?

Yep… it was a customs guard in Vancouver airport.

We heard that you could fly before you could drive… if you hadn’t become a pilot, what profession would you have gotten into?

No, flying was my only passion… when I was little it was either flying or golf. Golf was sort of a “richer man’s sport” and I saw a lot of pros who didn’t make a lot of money, but I really wanted to be a pilot.

Is there anything that the cameras don’t capture?

Yes and no. Not really. What you see is what you get. They do a great job at portraying what they see.

What do you do to unwind?

I fly!
