‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot Moves Forward at Warner Bros.

Those tombs weren’t going to raid themselves. Warner Bros. has just started moving on a reboot of the hit Tomb Raider movie franchise, based on the series of popular video games about the British adventurer Lara Croft. Deadline reports that Evan Daugherty (Divergent) is already hard at work on the screenplay.

The first film in the Tomb Raider franchise, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a respectable $274 million worldwide way back in 2001. The sequel, the awkwardly titled Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, wasn’t quite as popular, grossing just $157 million in 2003.

Since then, a sequel or reboot seemed inevitable but only Tomb Raider XXX ever came together. The video game series recently rebooted, featuring a younger Lara Croft at the start of her adventures. Whether the new film franchise will adapt the origin stories of the new Tomb Raider games or bring Lara Croft back at the height of her abilities remains to be seen.

Deadline reports that MGM will co-finance the production of the Tomb Raider reboot, which will be produced by Oscar-winning producer Graham King (The Departed).

No word yet on possible casting, of course, but you can expect every British actress between 20 and 40 years old to be on Warner Bros.’ short list to take over the lead role.
