The ‘Fantastic Four’ Trailer is FINALLY Here

20th Century Fox has been ridiculously coy about releasing any advance images or video from their upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, but with the film coming to theaters on August 7, 2015, we knew the wait couldn’t last much longer. Comic book fans everywhere were hoping that the first look would be fantastic, but was anybody really prepared for the first Fantastic Four trailer to be ‘fant4stic?”

Title screens that replace letters with numbers haven’t been cool since Se7en came out in 1995, which just makes this attempt by director Josh Trank (Chronicle) to update Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s influential comic book creations for the 21st Century that much more conflicting.

The first Fantastic Four trailer, above, is a somber affair which demands that this quartet of scientist superheroes – Mister Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing – be taken seriously. No small effort, after the hokey, mostly unpopular Fantastic Four films that came out between 2005 and 2007 under the auspices of director Tim Story (Ride Along).

Here, clearly influenced by the “Ultimate” origin of The Fantastic Four, we see Reed Richards (Miles Teller) take his three friends not into space, but into four refrigerators that seemingly transport them to an alien realm not unlike the Phantom Zone, particularly as depicted in 1984’s Supergirl. Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey, “The Wire”) also has some very, very important things to say about science and… stuff. It’s all very important science-y stuff.

You can watch the first trailer now, and you can also watch Josh Trank and screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) discuss what you’re seeing in a video commentary track available at Yahoo. Their commentary reveals little, however, other than that they got Stan Lee’s personal approval, that they were influenced by the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic books, and that they think the big money shot is our first, not-quite look at Jamie Bell as The Thing, which is kind of neat but not exactly likely to break the internet.

Check out some high-resolution stills from the first Fantastic Four trailer, and let us know if you’re officially excited, or officially worried now that we’ve finally seen the rebooted superhero team in action.
