Thanksgiving 2014 Is Anniversary of ‘Butt Fumble,’ Flutie’s Hail Mary

Thanksgiving 2014 just so happens to be the anniversary of many iconic football moments.

There is Dave Williams (Chicago Bears), who in 1980 became the first player in NFL history to return a kick for touchdown in overtime.

There is Joe Montana (Kansas City Chiefs, not with SF), who in 1994 became the 5th quarterback to surpass 40,000 yards passing.

There is Dan Marino’s fake spike, which happened 20 years ago this Thanksgiving as well. (cut to 4:45 mark)

There is even Doug Flutie, who on Thanksgiving Friday 1984, threw the hail mary pass that resulted in the ‘Miracle in Miami.’

Butt (pun intended) it’s also the two year anniversary of the infamous Mark Sanchez ‘Butt Fumble.’ It’s a play so disastrous that none of us will ever forget where we were when we saw it unfold.

Sanchez tries to gain some ground with a rush up the middle before colliding and fumbling the ball off teammate Brandon Moore’s butt. The Patriots’ Steve Gregory recovers the fumble and heads into the endzone for an easy score

The Patriots won 49-19. It’s essentially the most embarrassing play in New York football history.

It even inspired an ESPN ‘Sports Science’ episode:

And let’s not forget the ugliest anniversary of them all. As Deadspin pointed out (click the link to see the explicit sexts), this Thanksgiving marks the five year anniversary of Tiger Woods’ domestic meltdown. And by meltdown, I mean he got totally busted for being a serial adulterer (with a pornstar mostly) after crashing his Cadillac Escalade into a tree while his then-wife Elin Nordergren chased him with a golf club.

Of course, Tiger hasn’t won a major since.

Butt (had to add one more) while toasting this Thanksgiving, be sure to give thanks to not only the great football moments of years’ past, but to the most infamous of moments as well.

To the butt fumble, we salute you.

Happy Thanksgiving.
