‘Arrow’ Producer Teases The Return of Tommy Merlyn

Colin Donnell’s Tommy Merlyn was the sacrificial lamb of “Arrow” Season 1. When he was first introduced in the pilot episode, everyone assumed that Tommy would go on to become Merlyn, the archrival of Green Arrow.

But in the first season finale, Tommy died and his friend, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) vowed to never kill again.

During a new interview with Eonline, “Arrow” executive producer Marc Guggenheim confirmed that Donnell will be making his third appearance on the show since his character’s demise. And while the first two times came as a hallucination and a flashback, respectively, this time will be something different.

“We love Colin Donnell and we love having him on the show,” explained Guggenheim. “I was on set for his scene at the end of season one and the second we wrapped him, I said to him, ‘I’m so glad we do flashbacks on this show!’ So yes, you have not seen the last of Tommy Merlyn.”

Guggenheim added that “the next time you see Tommy Merlyn, you will see him again on the show but it won’t be the way you’re expecting.”

The speculation is that Tommy’s body may find its way to a Lazarus Pit. And when Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) is already on the show, that doesn’t seem very far fetched at all.

Earlier this week, The CW revealed the first pictures of Katie Cassidy’s Laurel Lance in costume as the new Black Canary. However, Guggenheim was quick to clarify that Laurel has barely begun her heroic journey.

“It depends on how you define ‘journey,’” said Guggenheim. “What Laurel is going to discover is that being a hero is more than wearing a mask and that wearing a mask and costume does not a hero make. It’s not going to be an easy road for Laurel no matter how quickly she suits up.”

“Arrow” Season 3 continues next Wednesday, November 19 on The CW.
