AMC Renews ‘Hell on Wheels’ For FIfth & Final Season

Whenever AMC decides that a show must end, the network tends to split the final season into two parts. For “Hell on Wheels,” that means one more season over the course of two years.

Today, AMC officially announced the renewal of “Hell on Wheels” for a fifth and final season of 14 episodes. Seven episodes will premiere in Summer 2015, while the remaining seven episodes will be held for Summer 2016 on AMC. That will bring the total number of “Hell on Wheels” episodes to 57 by the end of its run.

In a statement, AMC President Charlie Collier said “With season five of ‘Hell on Wheels,’ we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years. We look forward to appropriately honoring ‘Hell on Wheels’ in this final season. Enormous thanks to the terrific writers, cast and crew for all they have achieved and for all that lies ahead in the Wild West.”

“Hell on Wheels” struggled for its first two seasons before unexpectedly finding an audience on Saturday nights. The current season of “Hell on Wheels” is averaging 3.4 million viewers in a very difficult timeslot.

With the departure of Common earlier this season, the current cast of “Hell on Wheels” includes Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Robin McLeavy, MacKenzie Porter, Jake Weber and Kasha Kropinski.

The final three episodes of “Hell on Wheels” Season 4 will return to AMC this Saturday, November 8.
