Texas A&M Win Gives $1 Million In Furniture For Fans

Texas A&M thrashed South Carolina 52-28 in Columbia in the SEC opener Thursday night. Because of the win, there is a large group of Aggie fans getting more then $1 million in free furniture.

It turns out the local Ashley Furniture store in College Station ran a promotion from Aug. 16 through Aug. 27 in which all furniture purchased would be given free if the Aggies beat the Gamecocks by 10 points or more.

Mark Wilks, who owns the store, told ESPN.com on Thursday night that more than 600 people bought items during that time period totaling more than $1 million in sales. One customer, Wilks said, bought $20,000 worth of furniture.

“We’ve wanted to do this for three or four years now,” said Wilks, whose store is an official sponsor of Aggies athletics. “This was really good for us.”

Wilks said that thanks to the promotion, his store had its best month of sales in the eight years it has been open.

Crazy right? But not so much. Ashley Furniture took out insurance to cover most of the loss and will only have to pay about 15 percent of the total they will now be forced to give away. Add to the enormous free advertising they are getting from the story and everyone wins.
