Murray Eases Past Kyrgios At Rogers Cup

Andy Murray needed just 54 minutes to dispatch of Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto while Sam Stosur also suffered an early exit in Montreal.

Last year’s Wimbledon winner showed no signs of rust in his first match since bowing out in the final eight of last month’s London Grand Slam, producing seven aces and 14 winners in the 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Fresh off a stint at his training base in Miami with new coach Amelie Mauresmo, Murray’s successful return to the ATP circuit after a 13-month title-less run will see the Scot advance to face Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the third round, who completed a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 come from behind victory over Ivo Karlovic.

“I knew it was going to be a tricky match- (Kyrgios) has obviously got a lot of confidence with the way Wimbledon went and winning his first match here but I played to play with a lot of variety, which has always been my game really,” Murray told Sky Sports after the match.

“I maybe went away from that a little bit at some points over the last year or so but that’s when I play my best tennis and it worked well today.”

Sam Stosur’s lacklustre US Open preparation continued with a second round exit courtesy of world No.1 Serena Williams.

The 2011 Flushing Meadows champion was squashed in less than an hour by the 61-time WTA title winner 6-0, 6-2, a week after suffering an embarrassing loss to Japanese teenage qualifier Naomi Osaka in the opening round of the Bank of West Classic at Stanford University.

“I thought I played well tonight. She’s won a Grand Slam title and she’s a really good player, so it was important for me to play well,” Williams said later to WTA.com.

Fellow Aussie female Casey Dellacqua suffered a similar fate, losing to second seed Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2.
