Novak Djokovic was seen furious over the court’s retractable roof during his match at Wimbledon. He raised concerns that have also been shared by Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray over the years.
Murray and Nadal previously made the same point that Djokovic delivered during his heated Wimbledon remarks
Novak Djokovic, while playing against Felix Auger-Aliassime in a heated match on Tuesday, raised the issue of the Centre Court’s roof. He was furious when referee Denise Parnell decided to shut the roof to avoid a halt in the middle.
Reacting to the decision, Djokovic said, “Why now? Why? The other day, you didn’t want to close it until, like, 8.20, 8.30, and now you want to close it? You don’t want to get to 8.30? It’s 7.40 now. We can play another whole set. Outdoors. We are an outdoor tournament.”
Parnell clarified regarding the halt and referred to Jannik Sinner’s match when the roof was closed similarly. However, Djokovic further argued, “With Jannik, I don’t care what happens. I care about our match right now.”
Closing the roof midway has been one of the main concerns for many top players. Often, his contemporaries, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, called out the same issue. All three players have questioned the policy on various occasions. Nadal shared a similar concern in 2018, when he lost a heated match against Djokovic. Nadal and Murray also raised the point previously about the change in weather after the roof is closed, even though conditions were fine before.
The players have questioned why the roof is closed even when there is enough daylight and dry weather, according to The Mirror.
Djokovic, 39, is currently playing in Wimbledon for his 25th Grand Slam title. The fiasco happened during the longest quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Djokovic won the match 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4). Djokovic’s latest remarks have sparked discussion over the long-standing debate at Wimbledon.
