George R.R. Martin’s The Ice Dragon Returns To Print This Fall

At first glance, George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (the novel series upon which HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is based) isn’t exactly fodder for a children’s novel. But Martin has not only written the book, he did it 34 years ago!

Back in 1980, sixteen years before A Game of Thrones was published, Martin released a children’s novel called The Ice Dragon with illustrations by Yvonne Gilbert. The Ice Dragon was republished in 2007, but it subsequently went out of print.

This October, Tor is republishing The Ice Dragon with 30 new illustrations by fantasy legend, Luis Royo.

Although The Ice Dragon predates the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, it does belong to the same universe… in a way. The Ice Dragon exists as a story within the world of “Game of Thrones,” but the events it describes are more of a legend than a factual recounting.

The Ice Dragon focuses on a young girl named Adara, who is “a child of winter” and the only person who can tame the mythical Ice Dragon. Together, Adara and her Ice Dragon are forced to take on “fiery dragons from the North” and save their world from destruction.

According to Tor, The Ice Dragon will be released through its Tor Teen imprint on October 21.
