A Next-Gen Crazy Taxi Is Possible, Says Series Creator

If you’ve ever owned a Dreamcast, then surely you remember Crazy Taxi — mainly because it’s a blast to play, but also because there were only so many worthwhile games to be found on the platform in the US. Since its early days, Crazy Taxi and its sequels have found their way to many platforms, the most recent of which include mobile phones. In honor of Crazy Taxi: City Rush‘s release on iOS and Android in the near future, series creator Kenji Konno is speaking up about what subsequent entries in the series might entail.

Specifically, Konno wants a next-gen Crazy Taxi to evolve the series in a meaningful way, and he emphasized this when discussing the matter with IGN.

I don’t know how old I would be when the next one came out, but there are some features I would like to add to new Crazy Taxi games, but I haven’t managed to figure out how to do it yet. This is the first time I’ve ever told anyone. The very, very first time. Ever.

There are two things I want to achieve but I haven’t yet. The first is time changing in the game, but it’s more than a simple day/night cycle. Passengers attitudes, the environments, the whole atmosphere of the game needs to change. I really want how you play the game to transition as time does. I haven’t managed to achieve that to a level I’m happy with yet, but I hope to in future.

The second aspect is multiplayer. It’s figuring out the best way to do it, which again is something we haven’t done right yet. They’re the two points we’d like to achieve in future, but I haven’t reached the point where I’m satisfied. I’m open to feedback and suggestions!

Clearly, admitting he’s stumped is no small thing for Konno; it’s the first time he’s ever spoken a word about it! Still, I can’t help but agree that a new game would need something special to be a compelling buy on next-gen consoles. As timeless as the original is, customers leaping out of a taxi screaming “you suck!” as it hurtles down the highway is only funny for so long. Then again, maybe it never stops being funny.
