‘The Magicians’ Reappear At Syfy

Back in 2011, Fox ordered pilot script for “The Magicians,” an adaptation of Lev Grossman’s novel of the same name by X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. In the three years since that deal, Grossman has released two additional novels in the series, but the TV adaptation was in development hell until now.

Deadline is reporting that Syfy has ordered a pilot for “The Magicians” with a new script by former “Supernatural” showrunner, Sera Gamble and John McNamara (Prime Suspect).

In the first of Grossman’s “Magicians” novels, the main character was Quentin Coldwater, a young man who was recruited to attend an elite college for magicians before discovering that the fantasy world and characters from his favorite novels are real.

The new adaptation is said to begin earlier in the story than the Fox incarnation, as it focuses on “a group of New York twentysomethings who, while studying magic, discover the fantasy world they read about as children is all too real and poses a grave danger to humanity.”

Syfy already has “12 Monkeys,” “The Killjoys” and “The Expanse” set to premiere in 2015, so if “The Magicians” goes to series, it would likely premiere in the second half of 2015 or in early 2016.
