Sleeping Dogs Developer Planning New Free-to-Play Game for 2015

Sleeping Dogs isn’t a game I spent a whole lot of time with, but it is one I respect. In fact, despite Watch Dogs‘ recent sales surge on nearly every platform (PS4 being the most dominant), there are those who will tell you that outside of Rockstar’s calculably superb Grand Theft Auto V, Sleeping Dogs is one of the few truly great open-world titles in recent memory. From what I played, I don’t think I’d argue that.

The folks behind Sleeping Dogs, United Front Games, haven’t been resting on their laurels. They recently worked on Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, and have now revealed that they have a new free-to-play title slated for release in 2015. There aren’t loads of details just yet, but we do know that United is working with Nexon America to get the game published.

Nexon is highly experienced in the free-to-play realm, and their CEO Owen Mahoney seems quite excited about United’s mysterious new title.

We are committed to bringing a new line-up of AAA-quality free-to-play games to the Western market, and our partnership with United Front Games is another step toward achieving this goal. United Front Games’ team has a great track record of developing successful titles, and we’re looking forward to showing the world what our combined strengths can create in 2015.

You may not have heard of Nexon, but you’re probably familiar with one of their bigger properties; they’re the publisher behind Maple Story, the popular 2D MMORPG. I’m not sure how I feel about this free-to-play endeavor taking precedence over the next Sleeping Dogs, but perhaps future info about United’s latest will help change my mind.

As for the possibility of the free-to-play title and the new Sleeping Dogs being one in the same? Not likely — the sequel is already confirmed to be staying in the hands of Square Enix.
