CIAS 2014: New Toyota Highlander Redesigns to Stay the Same

When Toyota redesigns one of their successful vehicles, they never go too crazy. Case in point? Check out the new 2014 Toyota Highlander.

For the new design year, Toyota introduced the new four door SUV with a larger, more aggressive grill and a more aerodynamic roof. Inside, the automaker made satellite navigation and its Entune interactive screen technology standard across the trim levels. A new all-wheel drive system maintains the vehicle’s stability with two available engine configurations — a 2.7 or 3.5 liter power plant putting out 185 or 270 horsepower respectively.

The result is a more attractive, more technologically capable urban SUV that keep all passengers comfortable amused for a price starting just south of $30,000.

However, with all of these changes and improvements, Toyota did not wander too far afield on its design for what was already a successful SUV. They made the exterior a little more exciting and made sure the interior was up to speed with modern technology and comfort expectations. But, the SUV is still a city-centered, family friendly vehicle best kept to the streets and away from the off-road trails.

I had a chance to test drive the new Highlander recently and found it easy to handle  especially for its size. Toyota built a vehicle here that can serve as a fully functional urban people carrier, long-distance tourer or soccer mom/dad kiddie shuttle.

Families strolling through CIAS 2014 this week will find an attractive, capable option for full household transportation for a smaller price tag than similarly sized imports.
