Exclusive Interview: José Padilha on RoboCop

CraveOnline: Do you feel like you’ve explored what you want to explore now, or if you had the opportunity would you remake RoboCop 2 next?

José Padilha: [Thinks.] I have to say to you that I really love the original RoboCop.

Yes…

I think the original RoboCop is a brilliant movie for all the reasons that people already know. I don’t like so much the sequels as much as I like the original.

I hate RoboCop 3.

No, [RoboCop] 3 sucks. I gotta say that.

RoboCop doesn’t show up in that movie for 20 minutes!

[Laughs] Let’s not talk about this…

I’ll say bad things about RoboCop 3. You defend it, how’s that?

There’s no way I’m going to defend it.

[Laughs.]

You know what’s funny about this? I am a RoboCop geek. I love RoboCop. I love the original film. I saw it a million times. I’m a total fan of Verhoeven. I love, I love, I love Starship Troopers. I love the crazy casting. I really love the boldness, and how brave he is as a filmmaker. And that’s the reason why I didn’t try to remake RoboCop, because it’s not doable.

It’s very Verhoeven.

It’s stupid to try to do it. That brilliant idea he had, and the criticism of the media he had, of the advertising and so on, I updated that but then I did my own thing, you know what I mean? Because I how can I try and do…

I was trying to think of your version versus his, and I can’t help it, I’m a RoboCop geek as well…

Yeah.

There’s so much anger in his movie. He’s furious at the state of things or where he thinks things are going, and it comes across.

Yeah.

But yours, it feels like it’s from a more cynical age where technology comes out and we’re all like, “The NSA is spying on us? I assumed they were.” It doesn’t affect me anymore.

[Laughs.] You get used to it!
