HBO Announces ‘Game of Thrones’ Return Date & The End of ‘Boardwalk Empire’

HBO is presenting seven panels to the Television Critics Association today, so the executives won’t be on stage. However, Quenin Schaffer, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications for HBO, began the sessions with some announcements everyone has been waiting for.

“Game of Thrones” season four will premiere Sunday, April 6 at 9PM. “Veep” will follow at 10 with the premiere of Mike Judge’s “Silicon Valley” at 10:30. They’re bringing back “Vice,” this time “with no Dennis Rodman,” said Schaffer, at 11.

There’s even more “Game of Thrones” to anticipate. This Sunday, when HBO’s “True Detective” premieres, it will be preceded by a teaser for “Game of Thrones” season four. “This Sunday, prior to ‘True Detective,’ we are going to be showing the first trailer for season four of ‘Game of Thrones,’” Schaffer said. Schaffer promised a look at “a lot of new characters, so something to look forward to.”

In a surprise announcement, Schaffer confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of “Boardwalk Empire” would be its last. “‘Boardwalk Empire’ is going to have its fifth and final season this fall,” Schaffer said. “It’s had a terrific run and Terry Winter has promised an exciting and powerful conclusion, which kind of scares me because he’s had one every season.”
