The Top 20 Comedy Sequels of All Time

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is finally here, after years of speculation and frantic praying on the Northern Star. It may be safe to say that Anchorman 2 is the one of the most anticipated comedy sequels in history, which is funny if you think about it. Comedy sequels suck more often than sequels in any other genre. Comedy depends on the unexpected, and repeating the same gags over and over again is anything but unexpected. Hell, it describes just about every comedy sequel ever made.

Fortunately, Anchorman 2 is very, very funny – although not as funny as the original – which got us thinking. How many great comedy sequels are there? How does one even rate a comedy sequel, considering that most of them are simply retreads of the original film?

We decided that the only thing that really matters is whether or not they’re funny, although a few of our picks for the Top 20 Comedy Sequels of All Time are also excellent motion pictures in their own right. Most of them, however, follow the comedy sequel formula to the letter, but for the sake of these rankings we’ll consider them worthy if they simply make us laugh, but we’ll also give bonus points if they’re inventive enough to strike out on their own and do something a little different than the rest.

Two more rules: 1) Only one sequel per franchise. Otherwise, there would be a LOT of Pink Panthers on here. 2) The films need to be proper sequels, not just reteamings of comedy troupes. Otherwise there would be a LOT of The Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello and Cheech & Chong on here.

Now, with that out of the way, let’s take a look at CraveOnline’s picks for The Top 20 Comedy Sequels of All Time.
