Sledging In The Spotlight After Australia’s Big Ashes Win

Australian Test captain Michael Clarke was fined for sledging during last week’s first Ashes Test in Brisbane while teammates admitted to going ‘over the top’ in the big win.

Australia claimed a massive 381-run over the stunned visitors last weekend, but the bad blood between both sides continues as captain Clarke was docked 20 per cent of his match fee for threatening tail end batsman James Anderson.

The International Cricket Council claimed Clarke used “language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an international match” when he told Anderson that the Aussie bowlers would “break his f—ing arm”.

David Warner took it a step further, telling a press conference full of journalists that he believed batsman Jonathan Trott was afraid of short bowling.

Leaving Brisbane airport on Monday, Warner refused to retract his comments, but did say the on-field talking probably went a little “too far”.

“It is Ashes cricket. Probably went a little bit too far with the comments, but it’s cricket and now it’s in the back of their mind.”

Mitchell Johnson claimed man of the match honours for his brilliant performance with both bat and ball, helping Australia recover from 6-132 start to day 1 before running out easy winners.

In other Ashes news, England batsman Jonathan Trott has called an early end to his tour and is heading home due to a “stress-related illness”.

“I don’t feel it is right that I’m playing knowing that I’m not 100% and I cannot currently operate at the level I have done in the past,” said Trott via Twitter.

“My priority now is to take a break from cricket so that I can focus on my recovery. I want to wish my teammates all the very best for the remainder of the tour.”
