Syfy Puts ‘Beowulf’ TV Series Into Development

While several of Syfy’s recent TV shows in development have been based on old movies like Ghost and 12 Monkeys, the network is digging even further in the past for its newest project.

Matt Greenberg (1408) is writing and executive producing a new spin on “Beowulf” for Syfy, loosely based on the classic Old English poem about one of the first legendary heroes in literature. The original Beowulf story follows the title character in the 5th Century as he battles a monster named Grendel and Grendel’s Mother before confronting a dragon 50 years later.

Syfy’s take on “Beowulf” will reportedly follow Beowulf’s “rise to power and his feud with the monster Grendel.” The story of Beowulf has been adapted to film and television several times, including the 2007 CGI Beowulf movie (pictured above) that was scripted by Roger Avary & Neil Gaiman and directed by Robert Zemeckis

“Eureka” co-creator Andrew Cosby is executive producing the new “Beowulf” for Universal TV alongside Greenberg, Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik and Paulo de Oliveira.
