TIFF 2013: The Soska Sisters on See No Evil 2

CraveOnline: Do you think you’ll have Jacob’s POV camera again?

Sylvia Soska: I like you so much I want to tell you but I no, I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you anything about that.

Jennifer Soska: I can say that not only are we huge fans of Kane and Jacob Goodnight and Glen Jacobs. We are WWE fans. One of the first things we did when we were hired is we looked at all of the message boards and we did our research on what the fans loved about the first one, what the fans didn’t love about the first one, and what their expectations and hopes were for this one. So you will see a lot of nods to the fan base for all three of those things in this film.

Will we have to have seen See No Evil 1 to get See No Evil 2?

Jennifer Soska: Because it’s a WWE Studios film you should absolutely have seen it, but you are not going to be lost when you’re watching it. We don’t like making films that you’re not going to remember or feel out of place on. It’s like Halloween 2. If you haven’t seen Halloween 1, you’re going to be okay watching Halloween 2. I think this could be a WWE film that brings everybody into the mix to watch it and enjoy it. It’s going to be a film that if you haven’t seen a WWE horror film before that you’ve liked, this is where you’re going to start and you’re going to love it.

Sylvia Soska: Maybe if you have an opportunity before fall of next year when See No Evil 2 comes out, do check out See No Evil 1 because See No Evil 2 takes off right after the events of See No Evil 1 so it’s a continuation in sort of a way.

Maybe they can do it like all the Twilight sequels where they show the previous movies leading up to the first show.

Sylvia Soska: I would absolutely love that. In a dream world, it would be awesome if they made a whole franchise and it was popular and there was like seven of them and it was like this one week where Jacob goes nuts.

Jennifer Soska: In my humble opinion, Jacob Goodnight and See No Evil is definitely a franchise series and it’s a good franchise series. We haven’t had one that everyone’s gotten excited about for a while, and that’s our aim with this one.

Sylvia Soska: And in the vein of Twilight, I think Jacob Goodnight is way sexier than Jacob or Edward. We are actually getting T-shirts that say Team Jacob Goodnight on them so hopefully all the fangirls will be like, “Yeah, this guy’s pretty hot.”

Have you cast the other characters yet and might you go back to some of your previous actors?

Sylvia Soska: I cannot tell you although I can tell you there are some people that I really love working with and I don’t like making movies without them just because I know we work so well together. So maybe it would be cool if we brought somebody back from something, as vague as that is.

Jennifer Soska: We’re complete slaves to our fans and supporters so if someone wants somebody back, and I know that there have been somebodies that have been mentioned many times, we would love to deliver on that to the people that want to see it.

Have you done ABCs of Death 2 yet?

Jennifer Soska: No, we haven’t but I think all of them are due in at the end of the year. We already have our letter, which I can’t say, and we have our script which I can’t really talk about, and we have our cast and crew who I also can’t mention. I can say that almost all of the cast and crew are going to be people that are coming back from American Mary. As far as our cast go, there’s going to be some real fan favorite cameos in it. Who knows? Maybe you’ll see us appearing in another ABCs of Death, I can’t say.

Sylvia Soska: Hopefully, this is going to be the letter that you walk away after seeing the movie being like, “I don’t know which one it is or who did that, but letter ___ was the best letter out of the whole ABCs.”

Jennifer Soska: I know some people were hit and miss on the last ABCs of Death but this is the one that you’re going to be in love with, kind of like how V/H/S/2 was just phenomenal, especially Timo’s one was just so good. And Sylvia and I also have a running joke that we only do number twos of films.

Sylvia Soska: Except for See No Evil because I want to do 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. They’ll have to talk to me if they want me to do 10.

They changed the letters around on the first ABCs of Death anyway, so do you have to be slavish to the letter you were assigned?

Sylvia Soska: I cannot say but we got the letter we wanted to. Actually, when we first heard about The ABCs of Death, we were like, “Oh my gosh, I hope they ask us and this is what we’d do.” We didn’t get the opportunity on the first film so this idea has been formed, storyboarded, character designed for a while now so I’m really excited to bring it to life.

Jennifer Soska: It’s a couple years in the making and I know it’s not a competition, but we’re taking it as a competition.

How do you find the exercise of making a short that becomes part of a whole?

Sylvia Soska: I know who has the letter before us, so I am very, very thrilled because it’s one of my favorite directors and I feel that section of the alphabet is going to be really, really high quality. But there’s also a lot of surprises with it because there’s so many directors involved, I don’t actually know too many of them and I don’t know what they’re going to bring. I know this is a challenge for everybody to be like, “By the way, this is who I am and this is the style I can do.”

Jennifer Soska: I know the Astron-6 one is going to be the best. We have information that it’s going to be phenomenal. We’re huge lovers and fans of Astron-6 and Steve Kostanski. Everything they do is phenomenal. They can do no wrong. They have the Midas touch. They touch something and it just turns into super awesome.

Sylvia Soska: And they just finished filming with our actress, Tristan Risk, on their new film The Editor and from what I know about The Editor, it’s going to be the film to see when it comes out. It’s just so fantastic.

You mentioned appearing in another ABCs short. Could you appear in See No Evil 2 also?

Jennifer Soska: Well, Hitchcock always did it and I’m not going to say we will but I’m not going to say we won’t. After American Mary, we wanted that to be our last cameo in any of our films. Then the response was, “No, you better not. I want to see you in other things.” So the majority said they liked us and anyone who didn’t like our German accents, well, too tough for you. We’re going to keep appearing probably.

Sylvia Soska: Maybe.

Jennifer Soska: Possibly.

Would you want to get killed by Jacob Goodnight?

Sylvia Soska: That would be so utterly, utterly cool. However I do have a small kill list on my desk right now that I can’t tell you, and I think I have a pretty good idea who Jacob Goodnight is going to be killing.

Jennifer Soska: And I have a whole list of things I’d like to do with Jacob Goodnight.

Sylvia Soska: He’s also the [WWE] Divas’ favorite demon. He gets so much action, girls just love him so we really like the sexiness of him. You’re going to see a lot of things that Jacob Goodnight does that a bunch of people are going to be like, “You know what? I love that guy.”

Jennifer Soska: You might see a lot of things that a male director wouldn’t have the confidence to put in their film.

Well, I was so happy for you when they announced you were directing and I’m glad I can call WWE and tell them, “Get me the Soskas!”

Jennifer Soska: Back in the day when we were watching, we used to want to be wrestlers. I wanted to be The Undertaker’s girlfriend. I still kind of do.

Sylvia Soska: People keep asking us, “How are you going to top American Mary? How are you going to top Dead Hooker?” I have never been so supported in a production before and it’s amazing, because these guys really, really care about just pulling all the stops out. We’re getting the ability and support to do some crazy things that we just haven’t been able to do before so I think you’re really going to get a good glimpse into what kind of crazy we can do when there isn’t really a limit on it.
