MLB’s Angels Changing Name Again??

The city of Anaheim is currently voting on whether or not to re-discuss plans with Angels owner Arte Moreno, which includes the official name of the franchise. Over the decades the team has been named the Los Angeles Angels, California Angels, Anaheim Angels and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, so it should be to no surprise the name is being reconsidered yet again.

MyFoxLA:

The city of Anaheim is considering renegotiating its lease with the Angels in a bid to keep the baseball team in the Orange County city — and that may mean changing the team’s name.

The city council will weigh a proposal Tuesday to shift an option the team currently has to leave Anaheim from 2016 to 2019, the Orange County Register reported.

That would pave the way for a broader renegotiation of the team’s lease deal with the city, including a proposal to give the Angels exclusive control over the team’s name and development rights in the parking lot surrounding the 47-year-old stadium.

Hal Eisner:

Since the name changed in 2005 there has been an ongoing debate between many Anaheim residents about the name. James Mayfield, who admittedly is a Dodger fan, says get rid of the name Anaheim. LA is the city known around the world. Tony Nguyen says get rid of Los Angeles in the name. The team, he says, is not in LA. “It’s in Anaheim. In Orange County!!”

Don’t you just love politics. Just call them the Walt Disney Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in California, and get it over with.
