Tobey Maguire To Portray Bobby Fischer In Montreal-Shot Flick

Actor Tobey Maguire, best known for his work in movies like the “Spider-Man” trilogy, will star as chess champion Bobby Fischer in a new film that will be shot in Montreal this winter.

“Pawn Sacrifice” follows the story of the American chess champ and his triumph over Boris Spassky in 1972, whom he beat in what has been called one of the most infamous chess matches ever after the Russians had seized the title for more than two decades. According to a Global News article, Maguire’s Material Pictures will co-produce the film, which was written by Stephen Knight (“Eastern Promises”), and it is not yet known who will portray Spassky.

Maguire has been nominated for one Golden Globe for his role in “Brothers,” costarring Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman, and recently appeared in the hit Leonardo DiCaprio-led movie “The Great Gatsby.” He’s also in the new flick “Labor Day,” which is scheduled for release next month and co-stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.
