DRS Again Makes Ashes Headlines

The Ashes series has been rocked by another DRS incident as claims emerge players have used silicon-based adhesive tape to bats in an attempt to circumnavigate Hot Spot technology.

The Decision Review System has been a hot talking point during the first three Ashes Tests over the past month with the infa-red imaging Hot Spot system often facing criticism. Hot Spot review technology received another blow to its credibility on Wednesday night.

Channel Nine reported that International Cricket Council’s general manager of cricket, Geoff Allardice is heading to Durham ahead of the fourth Test to ‘discuss’ the alleged use of tape used to cheat Hot Spot cameras.

The bat taping issue first came to light during last week’s third Ashes Test when Hot Spot failed to pick up an edge from England’s Kevin Pietersen. Despite Hot Spot supporting Pietersen’s review of the decision, the Snickometer was able to prove ball clearly connected with bat.

According to Channel Nine, currently only English players are alleged to have used tape, however Nine claims members of the Australian team may also face investigation.

Allardice is expected to meet with both coaches and captains in the coming days and although leadership from both sides have supported the technology, England coach Andy Flower has taken his turn voicing concern over DRS.

“I thought that DRS had worked pretty well in international cricket prior to this series but in this series it hasn’t worked well at all,” Flower said recently.

“I wouldn’t necessarily blame technology – what we have at the moment is the best we’ve got – I might question whether we’re using it as wisely as we can. I think we, the cricket community, can use it better.”
