At the end of Showtime’s panel at the Television Critics Association Press tour, Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins was asked about the proposed “Dexter’ spinoff and he responded with “we announced a deal with Scott Buck today. Draw your own conclusions.”
The conclusions we drew were that someone significant lives through the finale to get their own series. After the panel, a large chunk of the TCA approached Nevins to press for more “Dexter” spinoff info. Nevins covered his bases at that point.
“There’s nothing actively happening,” said Nevins, adding he’s made no deals with any “Dexter” cast members for another series.
Among those tantalizing conclusions you might draw, don’t assume the spinoff would even happen within the two-year deal that Buck just signed. “I wouldn’t count on that and I don’t know that there will ever be a spinoff,” Nevins said. “It could well never happen.”
Dexter could kill everyone in the series finale for all we know, but even if there’s no current cast member spun off, a spinoff could simply take place in the world of “Dexter.” Right, David?
“Of course all options will be explored,” acknowledged Nevins. “We’re really not dealing with it at all until we’re through this season and maybe for a while thereafter.”
Part of Nevins’ hesitancy to go into detail appears to be a desire to keep the series finale unspoiled as to who lives or dies.
“The original series is everything. I just dropped a hint or a tease,” offered Nevins. “It’s all about the satisfying ending to the show. We have a deal with Scott and we’re going to develop a bunch of different things with him. There’s nothing else to be concluded at this point. I don’t know anything. There’s nothing real. There’s no sense of whether it’ll happen, if it’ll happen but I want to stay in business with Scott.”
But then, even the conclusion of “Dexter” won’t write a spinoff into a corner. “Well, there’s always things that can be done,” teased Buck. Asked which character he’d be interested in spinning off, Nevins was diplomatic. “They’re all interesting to me.”
We’re all excited for the “Dexter” finale, including Nevins. “I think it ends with great satisfaction. That’s all I’ll say. I haven’t seen it yet but I have read it and I think it’s quite brilliantly built to.”
