Comic-Con 2013: ‘Arrow’ Casts Black Canary?!

From the very beginning of “Arrow,” the assumption was that Tommy Merlyn would become Oliver Queen’s greatest rival and “Laurel” Lance would become Green Arrow’s partner, Black Canary. Except Tommy is dead and there’s a new woman in Oliver’s life with a familiar alter-ego.

According to The Wrap, Caity Lotz has been signed to portray Black Canary in “Arrow” Season 2 on a recurring basis. Black Canary’s civilian name wasn’t disclosed in the story, but it’s unlikely that she’s Laurel’s long-lost sister, Sarah… which makes her identity a secret for now.

Bringing in Black Canary this quickly may be due to the unavailability of Jessica de Gouw to reprise her role as The Huntress now that she is the female lead on NBC’s “Dracula.” Although the way “Arrow” left things between Huntress and Oliver seemed to preclude any reconciliation between them.

Prior to “Arrow,” Lotz was best known for starring in the horror film, The Pact as well as her stint on MTV’s “Death Valley.” Lotz has also appeared in “Law & Order: LA” and “Mad Men.”

An official announcement of Lotz’s casting may come during the Saturday panel for “Arrow” at Comic-Con International.
