Rooney is NOT Leaving Manchester United, says David Moyes

The will he, won’t he debate surrounding Wayne Rooney’s future with Manchester United seems to have been settled, as United’s new manager David Moyes has stated that the club won’t be putting the striker up for transfer.

Moyes, who managed Rooney when he managed Everton, said: “Wayne Rooney will not be sold by Manchester United. We have spoken several times and what has happened before has gone now.

“I have known Wayne since he was 16, when he was at Everton. It is a little bit of deja vu. He is training really well, he is coming back in good shape and I am looking forward to working with him.

“We are working together now. I have seen a bit of a glint in his eye. He looks very happy and looks as if he’s going to knuckle down.

“I do not know what Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney said. That conversation was private and as far as I am concerned I am looking forward to working with Wayne. He [Ferguson] said you’ve got a very big player there [in Rooney], who has made a big impact in games but all the things he said about the squad were positive.”

Moyes also spoke of when he first found out he had got the United job, following the departure of Ferguson from the club. He said: “A lot of people thought I knew something about the job, but I knew nothing about it until Sir Alex gave me a call and asked me to come to his house.

“I thought he was going to ask to sign one of my [Everton] players. I wasn’t sure what he was going to ask me and the first thing he said to me was: ‘I’m retiring’. I said: ‘When?’ He said: ‘Next week’. And his next words were, ‘You’re the next Manchester United manager’. I didn’t get a chance to say no.”
