Netflix CEO ‘Willing’ To Do More Seasons of ‘Arrested Development’

Back in February, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings carefully described “Arrested Development” Season 4 as a “fantastic one-off” that was made under “non-repeatable” circumstances. Hastings also said that “we don’t anticipate being able to do seasons five, six, seven. We have less of a stake in it. ‘Arrested Development’ is a wildly successful tactic as opposed to fundamental to the strategy.”

However, after the apparently successful fourth season premiere of “Arrested Development” last Sunday, Hastings seems to have changed his mind faster than you can say “Qwikster.”

While speaking with CNBC (via Vulture), Hastings said that future seasons of “Arrested Development” are “unique because that’s really up to the talent. If the talent were willing to do more and interested in that I’m sure we would be willing.”

Netflix doesn’t release its viewing numbers, but early indications are that Netflix experienced a large spike in traffic that coincided with the release of all 15 episodes of “Arrested Development” Season 4.

“We’ve had very high expectations from the beginning for ‘Arrested Development’ because it’s got a well known brand,” noted Hastings. “And it met all of those expectations. We were just thrilled with the response. It’s been huge.”

The biggest obstacle to another season of “Arrested Development” would be bringing the cast back together yet again. Most of the performers are still tied to other film and TV projects. It’s not impossible, it’s just difficult to get them all free at the same time.
