Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Preview

It’s been a few weeks since the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer was released, leaving gamers around the world to contemplate what the newest chapter in the Call of Duty franchise would entail. At a recent pre-E3 press event, I was able to get a first look at some of the new features in Black Ops 2.

Eight reasons Black Ops 2 has us excited.

The biggest new feature available in CoD: BlOps2 is called “Strikeforce.” Strikeforce is a series of side missions during the campaign mode, which allow you to guide small-scale operations that could affect the outcome of the main campaign. The coolest thing about Strikeforce is the ability to control either a foot soldier or guide the action from an over-watch vantage point with the ability to fluidly switch back and forth between the two.

The major concern I had with this stems from playing the Modern Warfare series.  Whenever taking control of a predator drone, players had to find a place to hide and guide the drone. If you got shot, you lost control of said drone. Not so in Strikeforce. When a player switches from soldier to over-watch, the soldier will rejoin the rest of the ground troops as an NPC and continue the fight as the player sets rally points, targets, and controls the battlefield using the various drones at their disposal.

Another new feature is the use of the “Quadrotor” drones. In the trailer, you can see that there is a communications device on your character’s wrist. One of the things that this device allows for is the operation of Quadrotors in some levels of the campaign. When available, players can set rally points that the quadrotors will fly to and attack, or protect.  The coolest thing about these drones is they are small enough to fly indoors, which introduces a new dynamic to clearing buildings.

It remains to be seen if Activision plans to release any further details at E3 next month, or if they’re just going to parade around the same demo I was shown during their pre-E3 event. Either way, keep it locked to CraveOnline.com for all your Black Ops 2 news and updates.
