Disney Offloads A+E Global Media in $1.2 Billion Deal

A significant change in ownership is underway for A+E Global Media. Disney has agreed to part ways with its stake in the company in a new deal, bringing an end to its joint ownership with Hearst. Once the transaction closes, Hearst will become the sole owner of the media company.

Hearst acquires Disney’s stake in A+E Global Media for $1.2 billion

Hearst is taking full ownership of A+E Global Media after agreeing to purchase Disney’s 50 percent interest in the company in a $1.2 billion cash deal. The agreement concludes the longtime joint venture between the two media companies and gives Hearst complete control of the business behind brands such as A&E, History, and Lifetime.

According to Variety, the transaction is expected to close in September, with Paul Buccieri continuing to serve as president and chairman of A+E Global Media. The agreement does not affect Hearst’s separate ownership interest in ESPN, as that investment is unrelated to A+E Global Media.

The acquisition follows a strategic review launched in July 2025, when Disney and Hearst began exploring options for the broadcasting company. During that period, Starz was one of the companies that evaluated the business. However, it remains unknown whether those discussions moved forward. Hearst ultimately opted to purchase Disney’s 50 percent stake, bringing the company under its sole ownership.

Commenting on the transaction, Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz said, “We thank our Disney colleagues for decades of successful partnership. We look forward to supporting Paul Buccieri and A+E Global Media’s leadership team as they continue to make must-see programs and innovate around the great History, Lifetime and A&E brands.”

The transaction covers A+E Global Media’s television networks, content units, streaming apps, games, FAST channels, AVOD, and subscription-video services. This includes Crime 360, Lifetime Movie Club, and History Vault.
