TikTok Trends: ‘Coastal Grandmother’ Has Everyone Hot For Middle-Age Lifestyle

Cottagecore is so 2021. The aesthetic women of all ages aspire to now is much more mature. As in: elderly. It’s called “coastal grandmother.”

Leave it to TikTok to redefine what’s hot. According to one user on the video-sharing platform, all things associated with flowing tops, sun hats, and gray hair are now the standard of sexiness. (A big, airy beach house and lush garden also help, but they’re not required.)

TikToker Lex Nicoleta is credited with coming up with the “coastal grandmother” concept, though we’ve seen this character time and again in Nancy Meyers rom-coms. Nicoleta went viral in March with her video explaining what defines a coastal grandmother.

As Nicoleta explained to BuzzFeed News, a coastal grandmother is “a successful woman who creates a beautiful life for herself” by “embodying elements of coastal living and homemaking.” And she’s basically created a TikTok crash course for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in it.

Coastal grandmothers wear white button-down blouses or cozy turtlenecks, arrange bright blooms in their spacious homes, read magazines on the couch, drink wine all day, and cook farm-to-table dinners for their spoiled adult children in extravagant kitchens.

Cinematic role models include: Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give, Jane Fonda in Book Club, Diane Lane in Nights in Rodanthe, and Reese Witherspoon in Home Again. Real-life coastal grandmothers include celebrities like Oprah and Martha Stewart.

Nicoleta has even curated a playlist to get you in the coastal grandmother mood.

We don’t know about you, but somehow, we find ourselves feeling horny for granny…damn you, TikTok!
