J.K. Simmons Returns to ‘Justice League’ as Commissioner Gordon

There are so many actors already set to appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, not to mention the gajillion spin-offs that are supposed to follow it, that we almost forgot there was anyone left to cast in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League movie. Until today, that is, when Hollywood Reporter announced that Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) is set to play Commissioner Gordon, Batman’s longtime ally in comics, television and films.

Simmons is no stranger to comic book adaptations. Fans usually recognize the actor from his scene-stealing appearances as newspaper publisher J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s hit Spider-Man movies, but he has also appeared in Justice League before, as General Eiling in five episodes of the acclaimed Justice League Unlimited cartoon series.

Commissioner James Gordon has been a mainstay in the Batman movies and TV shows over the years, and has been played by dozens of different actors. Notable actors to have played Commissioner Gordon before include Neil Hamilton in the 1960s Batman television series, Pat Hingle in the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher movies, Bob Hastings in Batman: The Animated Series, Gary Oldman in the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy, Mitch Pileggi in The Batman, and most recently Ben McKenzie in the popular prequel series Gotham.

In the Justice League movie, Simmons will be joined by Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ray Fisher (Cyborg). Justice League: Part One is gearing up for production, and is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 17, 2016 and Justice League: Part Two is set for June 14, 2019.
