The Weeknd, Rachel McAdams Amongst Canadian Oscar Nominations

A handful of Canadian received recognition for their work on various films when this year’s Oscar nominations were announced – amongst them are The Weeknd, Rachel McAdams, set decorator Hamish Purdy, as well as Emma Donoghue, an author.

Chris Duesterdiek also received a sound mixing nomination, and Cameron Waldbauer one for visual effects – both men hail from Vancouver and worked on DiCaprio’s The Revenant (which received the most noms at 12).

The Weeknd, who have been riding a wave of success after success, is nominated for best original song for his track “Earned It,” which is from the flick Fifty Shades of Grey. McAdams, who appears in Spotlight, is nominated for best supporting actress.

The Oscars will take place on February 28th.
