The Big List | The 50 Best Horror Movies of the Century (So Far)

1. Shadow of the Vampire (dir. E. Elias Merhige, 2000)

LionsGate

E. Elias Merhige’s gorgeously arty historical revision posits that Max Schreck, the German actor who played the creature in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece Nosferatu was, in fact, a real vampire whom the director hired in a fit of artistic verisimilitude. I think that anyone who has seen Nosferatu may be able to accept this as fact, as the gaunt vampire lord from that film is otherworldly and supernaturally ghoulish. What’s more, Shadow of the Vampire hits film lovers in a cinematic sweet spot, detailing, as it does, the production of one of the most important horror movies of all time. ~ Witney Seibold
