Alex Kingston Returns To Doctor Who For 2015 Christmas Special

Alex Kingston’s River Song has an extremely complicated timeline on Doctor Who. River Song died in her first appearance on the series, back in the fourth season of Doctor Who. But because River is a time traveler, the Doctor met her at earlier points in her life and fell in love with her.

Kingston has signed on to reprise her role as River Song for the first time since the seventh season finale of Doctor Who. According to Variety, Kingston will be appearing opposite Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor for the first time on this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special. And apparently, BBC had no choice but to make the announcement now because the special is filming this week!

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” said Kingston. “Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humor and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read-through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the ‘Doctor Who’ team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

“The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost,” added Moffat. “The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…”

BBC America and BBC One will broadcast the Doctor Who Christmas special on December 25th. The ninth season of Doctor Who will premiere on BBC America on September 19th.
