Kurt Sutter Confirms Sons of Anarchy Spinoff Is in Development

During the seven season run of Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy on FX, it was widely assumed that Sutter would eventually make a spinoff series about the original nine members of the club while exploring the dynamic between Gemma Madock, Clay Morrow, and the late John Teller before his demise at their hands. Sutter even fueled that rumor himself several times.

For a cover feature in The Hollywood Reporter, Sutter has confirmed that a Sons of Anarchy spinoff is officially in development. But it’s not the prequel series that fans thought it would be. Instead, the potential spinoff will follow the Mayans, a Mexican-American motorcycle club operating out of Oakland.

On Sons of Anarchy, Emilio Rivera played Marcus Alvarez, the President of the Mayans who was an adversary for SAMCRO before forming a tenuous alliance with them in later seasons.

It’s unclear if the proposed Mayans series would take place in the present or in the past, but Sutter won’t be working on it directly. His time is currently consumed by his next FX drama, The Bastard Executioner, for which Sutter writes, directs, and he even co-stars as “The Dark Mute” under heavy makeup in several episodes.

FX is reportedly looking for a writer to serve as the showrunner on the Mayans series, while Sutter will remain involved with the franchise as an executive producer.
