The creator of Sons of Anarchy is not involved in the spin-off TV show. The new project, featuring Charlie Hunnam, has been greenlit for production by FX. Although the creator will not be part of the spin-off, he has released a video statement about it on his Instagram.
Kurt Sutter, the creator of the original show, won’t be part of the new spin-off, Legends. In a statement, Sutter said, “I know the news about Charlie’s show hit today, and I’m beginning to get some queries about it. I just want to say my piece. I’m not involved with Legends at all — nor should I be.”
“It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology,” he continued, “It’s really about the show and the legacy of the show, and, quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.”
In addition to being the creator, Kurt Sutter also served as the writer and executive producer of Sons of Anarchy, which premiered on September 3, 2008, on the FX cable network. He also acted as Otto Delaney in the show.
In his statement, Sutter admitted that Hunnam asked him “for his blessings” on the spin-off, and also stated that his wife, Katey Sagal, will be part of Legends. He added, “I think you’ll dig it. I love Charlie to death, and I think you will have mad love for this project as well,” urging audiences to watch the upcoming show.
What is the new Sons of Anarchy spin-off show about?
Legends will bring back the original cast to portray fictionalized versions of their respective roles from the original show. Along with Hunnam and Sagal, the ensemble for the FX limited series also includes Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi.
As per Variety, the official logline reads, “More than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
Charlie Hunnam developed the show with Jonathan Groff, and they will serve as executive producers alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. As of now, no release date has been announced yet for the spin-off.
