Band of The Month: The Crash Kings Strike Piano-Pop Gold With ‘Some Call It Love’

Welcome to the second installment of our Band of The Month series for August, featuring  Los Angeles rockers The Crash Kings. Last week we brought you a beautiful version of “Hesitate” off the band’s remarkable Dark of The Daylight. This time around, brothers Tony Beliveau (vocal/keyboards) and Mike Beliveau (bass), alongside drummer Tommy Rose, deliver the perfectly balanced piano-pop gem “Some Call It Love” from Bedrock L.A. studios.

Refreshingly untethered from the standard guitar-driven rock sound – because they don’t actually use guitars – The Crash Kings’ light psychedelica weaves through Tony’s endearing pop-hook rich melodies built on Mike’s thick, fuzzy bass foundation and Tommy’s metronomically tight kitwork. After the success of their recent EP Live Nudes, the guys settled in to work on their third album, to be released in late 2015.

They’ve evolved considerably since 2009 when the band released their eponymous debut album on Universal Motown. After establishing a hardcore local fanbase in LA’s fickle sonic-fashionista scene, the trio leapt to national attention with appearances Jimmy Kimmel Live!, George Lopez Tonight and more. Versatility’s proven essential as they’ve toured with acts ranging from Stone Temple Pilots to David Cook, Chris Cornell to Anberlin and beyond.

We hosted the boys out at Bedrock L.A. studios for a Band of The Month session taping for CraveOnstage. Check out a Crave-exclusive performance of The Crash Kings’ “Some Call It Love” – if you’re a fan of Ben Folds style piano flourishes, endearing melodies and gorgeous arrangements, you’re gonna love this:

Pick up their music on iTunes, and keep up with The Crash Kings at their official site, as well as on Twitter and Facebook. Check back next week for part 3 of their CraveOnstage session!
