WTF?! Spike Lee’s ‘Chiraq’ to Retell a 2,000 Year Old Greek Tale… With Kanye?

Update 5/12: A representative for West says he will not appear in the film: “Contrary to published reports, Kanye West will not be starring in Chiraq. However, there are discussions for West’s possible involvement in the film’s soundtrack, schedule permitting.”

If you’re looking for a clear sign of End Times, it seems you’ve found the right place. Spike Lee has certainly ignited his share of duds, but the Oscar nominated filmmaker is now pulling together a project that may eclipse Do The Right Thing. Kanye West, Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack are all reportedly signed on to Chiraq, a new musical comedy about a woman who wants to end gang violence in Chicago.

The kicker? Chiraq is set to be a reimagining the classic Aristophanes play Lysistrata, a comedy originally performed in ancient Athens. In the tale, a woman fighting to end the Peloponnesian war rallies other females to deny their men sex until they negotiated peace. Social Justice Warriors, get your picket pose ready…

Chriaq is set to be released online and in theaters via Amazon Original Movies.

Kanye turns down multi-million dollar Apple deal

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has reportedly taken issue with the name of the movie, and met with Spike about his plans. “We had an honest, frank conversation,” Emanuel told The Huffington Post. “He said that while the movie is about the neighborhood of Englewood, I was clear that I was not happy about the title.”

Well, Chicago residents aren’t thrilled about the insane gun violence plaguing the city. Which matters more? Whatever the case, it’s a safe bet that Chiraq will do better than his last film Da Sweet Blood of Jesus.

As for Kanye’s new album, we’re waiting ever-so-patiently…
