Watch The Gut-Punch Trailer For ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’

The long-awaited Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck is still over a month away with a May 4th HBO release, but a new two-and-a-half-minute trailer is enough to get the nostalgia juices flowing deeply – and return a sense of mystery to one of the most exploited names in Rock.

Snippets of never-before-seen home movies, family photos and artwork are woven through animation that helps shape the story of the Nirvana frontman. Cobain’s troubled beginnings the Pacific Northwest are documented in painfully clear detail, and we follow as he matures into a rebellious teen and ultimately a rock icon who couldn’t handle the fires crafting his legend.

Read our in-depth interview with the film’s director, Brett Morgen, in which he explains the struggle that Cobain would eventually lose himself to. “You see that he wants to be a doting father but he’s losing his battle to his addiction,” Morgen reflects.

But first, watch this gripping trailer and try to prepare yourself for the gut-punch that is the final shot…

While you’re at it, listen to the long-lost sound-pastiche mixtape Cobain curated, which would be the namesake inspiration for the film.
