The New FPS King: 6 Reasons Why CS: GO is Exploding in Popularity

Playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive these past couple weeks I’ve been reminded of just how timeless CS is.

I’ve been playing CS since 2001; by 2003 I was participating competitively in LAN tournaments and CALeague matches. While I never got into CS: Source, I’ve found myself hopelessly addicted to CS: GO. I’m not alone.

What you might not be aware of is that CS: GO is on the rise, and in a big way. This week it broke the 420,000 concurrent players mark, making it one of the most popular games on the market despite its two and a half years of age. For a game in a series noted for its extremely high skill-cap, that’s a huge triumph.

Before CS: GO there were CS 1.6 and CS: Source. Truth is, CS: Source was never the proper successor to CS 1.6 that Valve intended it to be. As a matter of fact, for most of the past 10 years CS 1.6 has remained more popular than its successor. The main reason for that was CS: Source was missing the significant upgrades that would warrant a transition from players who had invested thousands of hours into the original. So when Valve got to work on CS: GO, it made sure to think long and hard about how it could take CS to the next level.

If CS: GO‘s current popularity is any indication, Valve’s efforts have been successful.

I’ve decided to dig deeper into what has made CS: GO such an enormous success. You can learn more about it in the gallery below.
