Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy VII for PS4, But It isn’t a Remake

Final Fantasy VII stands as one of the most beloved games of all-time. I would personally consider it one of my top 3 favorites of all-time, and I’m not alone. Naturally, given its age a remaster is commonly requested. Well, Square Enix took the stage at PlayStation Experience and made what appeared to be the ultimate announcement. But it wasn’t.

Final Fantasy VII has been announced for the PS4. Though, it’s not a remaster, remake, or anything of the sort. Instead, it’s a port of the PC re-release that includes a few options for toying with the game (i.e. instant level up), in addition to some mild improvements to the visuals.

Frankly, the presentation rubbed me the wrong way. It initially came across as an announcement for a true remake, but instead it’s another port, one that hasn’t done quite enough to quell the age of the game. As much as Final Fantasy VII means to me, its early 3D era visuals make it difficult to go back and play. I’m going to need more than a mildly-updated port to revisit this extraordinary title.

Nonetheless, you can watch the trailer below.
