TGS 2014: Kojima Demonstrates Simplicity and Power of MGS5’s Fox Engine

Chances are you’ve seen screenshots of the Fox Engine, or experienced it yourself with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. What you might not know is how powerful the engine is, and what it means not only for the Metal Gear franchise, but other games that will run on the engine.

During a Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain panel at TGS yesterday, Kojima Productions showed off what it’s like to work with the Fox Engine. What was shown was an extremely easy to use development kit with tons of options. The operator turned a flat mound of dirt into a dense jungle within mere seconds, with NPCs, livestock, lighting sources, and topography. The day/night cycle and weather were then shown within the real-time demo, leaving spectators in awe.

The work that was invested in creating the Fox Engine has paid off tremendously with how it’s simplified the process of creating an expansive open-world for The Phantom Pain. It’s significantly reduced the time needed to design levels, allowing Kojima Productions to make the world even larger and more detailed. The map is said to be about 24 square kilometers, which is well beyond what the franchise has ever seen before.

You can see the demo in the video above.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is expected to debut next year for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, and PC.
