Welbeck is a “Crucial Signing” for Arsenal, says Wenger

Former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck has been described as a “crucial signing” for Arsenal by manager Arsene Wenger.

Welbeck was lured to Arsenal from Man U after striker Olivier Giroud was sidelined with a foot injury, with Welbeck being signed for a low price of just £16 million.

While Welbeck’s performances on both the club and international stage have attracted criticism over the years, his performance in England’s 2-0 victory against Switzerland seemed to indicate that the switch to the Emirates may have helped with his confidence in front of goal, with him securing a brace in the game.

Speaking of the signing to Sky Sports, Wenger said: “We have lost an important striker in Olivier Giroud and we are short in numbers up front.

“Danny Welbeck is an ideal signing for us because he can play through the middle, which I think is his best position, as well as on the flanks.

“He brings the quality of his team attitude, which is very important to us, his pace as well and as you can see with England, his goalscoring.”

Wenger was also questioned about whether or not he would have signed the 23-year-old had Giroud not have been injured, to which he replied: “It’s possible, yes.”
