Amy Winehouse Sculpture Will Be Erected in Camden, London

A statue of Amy Winehouse is set to be erected in Camden market, London.

The life-size, brass memorial has been designed by Scott Eaton, and will be positioned in the Stables market, not far from the late singer’s home where she died in 2011.

The statue was previously going to be erected in London’s famous Roundhouse venue, but its move to Camden will now make it more easily accessible to her fans. Her father Mitch Winehouse has also stated how he hopes that the statue will give fans somewhere to pay their respects other than her home.

Speaking to the Guardian, Mitch said: “It’s a great honour to have the statue in the Stables. Amy was an integral part of Camden and still is, so you couldn’t really think of putting a statue for her anywhere else, could you really?”

He also revealed how the Camden council had gone out of their way to give the okay to the development of the statue, adding: “I had a meeting with Camden council and they told me they don’t usually allow statues until 20 years after someone has died, but in Amy’s case they made an exception.”

The statue is not the first tribute Camden has made to Winehouse since her death, as last year multiple venues across the north London borough staged events to mark what would have been her 30th birthday.

Winehouse’s mother Janis and brother Alex have also contributed to the statue’s design, which will feature her iconic “beehive” hairstyle and will also include information on how to donate to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity which helps prevent drug and alcohol misuse among young people.

Mitch added that the statue is being built in honour of the singer’s fans, saying: “It’s personal to the family but it is also very important for her fans. We wanted to do something like this to give the fans a focal point to remember her and pay their respects.

“They were always wonderful but after she passed away they kept us all going and it’s important that we repay them in some way, and this sculpture is some small way of us repaying their kindness and their love.”

The statue will be unveiled on September 14th this year, which would have been Amy Winehouse’s 31st birthday.
