April 2014 NPD Figures Show Why Microsoft Dropped the Mandatory Kinect

NPD Group has released its sales figures for the month of April, and they tell a dramatic story.

For one, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One 2:1 during the month. The Xbox One’s strong March with Titanfall and several third-party games didn’t carry over very well. Here is the order of hardware sales:

  • PlayStation 4: Best selling hardware.
  • Xbox One: 115K
  • Xbox 360: 71K

Surprisingly, the Xbox One sold more poorly during the month than the Xbox 360 ever did from 2006 to 2013. If you’re at all wondering why Microsoft made the announcement this week to drop its pay wall for Xbox Live and remove Kinect from the Xbox One’s packaging, there’s your answer.

As much as it looks like the PS4 is dominating, the Xbox One managed to perform much better in terms of software. Titanfall took the cake, although much of that is owed to its Xbox 360 release earlier in the month. It has maintained an attachment rate of 3, which is one of the highest in console history. Meanwhile, inFamous: Second Son has completely fallen off the top 10 list indicating its front-loaded sales figures.

Here is the official software chat:

1. Titanfall

2. Call of Duty: Ghosts

3. NBA 2K14

4. Minecraft

5. LEGO The Hobbit

6. The LEGO Movie Videogame

7. Lego Marvel Super Heroes

8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

9. Grand Theft Auto V

10. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Once E3 comes around next month, all of this won’t matter very much. Both parties can concentrate on their post-launch plans, and try to incite hype within consumers by making profound announcements.
