Listen: Brody Dalle Spikes The Softness With ‘Parties For Prostitutes’

Brody Dalle’s fully in gear now on the run-up to the release of her first solo album, Diploid Love, which arrives April 29th. The Distillers/Spinnerette frontwoman has just unleashed “Parties For Prostitutes” among the waiting masses, and we’re really liking where this is taking us.

After first grabbing us by the guts with lead single “Meet The Foetus/Oh The Joy,” we caught the second show of her warm-up tour before making international leaps – and had our rock n’ roll asses handed to us. Now, on “Parties For Prostitutes,” echo-rich vocals step through a dreamy waltz, following a stiffly building carousel beat before the chorus opens up to a sky of blazing, galloping intensity.

Brody confirms that she wrote the song on the Fun Machine organ in the back of a two-acre property in Encino, California, where she lived. Production wizard and multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes then went in, Dalle explains, and “wrote a bunch of really creepy parts that sound like a bummed out business man in a brown suit in downtown L.A. in the middle of summer. They’re incredible.”

The spiky chanteuse wrote all the songs and played almost all the instruments you can hear on the album herself. Additional contributors on Diploid Love include Garbage’s Shirley Manson, Warpaint’s Emily Kokal, Nick Valensi of The Strokes, and Queens of the Stone Age’s Michael Shuman. Brody co-produced the album with Alain Johannes, a producer extraordinaire with a hand in the work of QOTSA, Chris Cornell, Arctic Monkeys, Them Crooked Vultures and Mark Lanegan, to name just a few. Oh yeah, he also kicked the hell out of Crave’s SXSW show last year.

“It’s a song about betrayal,” she adds. “It’s a fuck you.” Well, we’re sold. Get your pre-order on at Brody’s official site.
