Sundance 2014: Steve Aoki Rocks the Rockies in Park City

While the days at Sundance 2014 are filled with film screenings and publicity for the dozens of independent movies looking to get distribution, that leaves more than a few hours at night for filmmakers and film fans to unwind.

And how better to decompress from hours of film viewing than to let the music take over, especially when it’s superstar DJ and legendary house-pumper Steve Aoki providing the beats?

Aoki was the headliner Sunday at a sold-out show at Park City’s Park City Live as nearly 1,000 fans put Hollywood wheeling and dealing aside and just sampled the always vibrant Sundance music mayhem.

Opening acts — not to mention a seemingly never-ending array of gorgeous dancers gyrating on stage — had the crowd appropriately primed for the pioneering Aoki.  And by 11:45 p.m., with the revved-up crowd drenched in sweat and the chants of “Ah-Oh-KEE!” rising from the pit and bouncing off the venue walls, the headliner finally obliged the thunderously receptive audience.

The EDM luminary had fans on their feet and even the heavily VIP crowd was lining the upper level rails — and screaming their heads off.

As always, the animated Aoki was a ball of energy onstage, standing on top of his booth and launching water bottles into the crowd.  Despite recent statements that his trademark cake-throwing antics may be behind him, the 36-year-old apparently isn’t ready to give up his signature move just yet, heaving a giant sheet cake into the enthusiastic and strangely appreciative pit dwellers.

In addition to reeling off his own string of dance hits, Aoki also unfurled “Afroki,’ the result of his ongoing collaborations with pal and fellow DJ superstar Afrojack.
