David Bowie, Morrissey and Ricky Gervais Lead Tributes to Lou Reed

The iconic Lou Reed died Sunday (October 27th) at the age of 71, and the impact he had upon musicians both young and old has been made clear as tributes continue to pour out to him.

David Bowie branded the late Velvet Underground singer and solo artist “a master” via a Facebook post, while Morrissey wrote on his True To You fansite: “Oh Lou / why did you leave us this way?

“No words to express the sadness at the death of Lou Reed. He had been there all of my life. He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be.

‘”I knew the Lou of recent years and he was always full of good heart. His music will outlive time itself. We are all timebound, but today, with the loss of liberating Lou, life is a pigsty.”

Comedian Ricky Gervais said that Reed was “One of the greatest artists of our time”, while The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas tweeted: “Lou Reed is the reason I do everything I do.” The band’s guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. added: “Still in shock! When I was 18yrs old you forever changed my life and I will never forget that! See you later ? @LouReed”

The Who tweeted: R.I.P. Lou Reed. Walk on the peaceful side”, with actor John Cusack also taking to Twitter to offer his condolences, adding: “Lou Reed RIP – always inspired by him – terrible news – only knew him through his art -a great – a singular poet.”
