Dark Matter Season 3 could take a surprising route instead of keeping one family at the center of every reality-hopping crisis. Joel Edgerton has floated an idea that would widen the story considerably, giving the sci-fi drama room to explore completely different lives while keeping its strangest piece of technology in play.
Dark Matter Season 3 could look at other families beyond Jason Dessen
Edgerton, who plays Jason Dessen, discussed the possibility during an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley. Rather than simply continuing Jason’s story, the actor suggested that the series could eventually work as an anthology, with new families becoming entangled in the Box and its ability to connect alternate realities.
The concept grew naturally from what happened during production. Edgerton said he felt “exhausted” after Season 1 because Jason appeared in almost every scene. Season 2 gave the supporting characters more room to breathe, and Edgerton welcomed that shift. He called himself “very enthusiastic and very happy” about following multiple characters on separate journeys.
That broader approach also fits the Box itself. Edgerton explained that the device could affect countless people, essentially creating new stories wherever its influence spreads. “The more this Box exists, the more lives it affects,” he said, suggesting that the technology could eventually teach the series what kind of story it wants to become. “I think sometimes the thing teaches you what it needs to be,” Edgerton said.
The idea arrives as the show enjoys a strong critical rebound. Season 1 holds an 81% Tomatometer score and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the series carries a 7.6/10 rating on IMDb. Season 2 opened even stronger, reaching 90% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes shortly after its Aug. 28 premiere.
Blake Crouch created the series from his 2016 novel, with Edgerton joined by Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel. Chris Diamantopoulos joined the cast for season 2. Apple TV has not announced a third-season renewal, but Edgerton’s proposal offers a way to keep the universe moving without simply repeating Jason’s original predicament.
