Jamie Lee Curtis recently recalled why she didn’t like filming for the Fox sitcom New Girl. In the series, Curtis portrayed Joan Day, the mother of Zooey Deschanel’s Jessica Day, and made several appearances across the seven seasons of the series.

Curtis said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that she “hated” her time on New Girl. “I did a single camera [sitcom], which I hated. I mean, great show, New Girl, very funny… It’s a good show, but doing it is just like doing a movie,” Curtis revealed at NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience. “You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”
While the single-camera format has been around for decades, it has gained prominence with the releases of shows like Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office, Modern Family, and more.
Curtis has reportedly “begged” her agents so that she could work on another multi-camera sitcom like Anything But Love and not on a single-camera comedy. Released on ABC, Anything But Love originally aired for four seasons between 1989 and 1992. Curtis played Hannah Miller in the series (via Entertainment Weekly).
Over three decades later, it seems that she’s finally getting her wish with Newlyweds, an NBC comedy co-starring real-world couple Téa Leoni and Tim Daly. Curtis portrays a character named Claudia in the show and serves as an executive producer.
Newlyweds’ log line reads, “A mature romance about a free-spirited woman and a reserved professor who marry quickly after a brief, passionate courtship.” Gail Lerner created the show for NBC.
Newlyweds debuts on NBC on October 23, 2026, at 8.30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, all seven seasons of New Girl are available for streaming on Hulu.
